A Brief History of Holiday
Long before Holiday had a name, the land around the Anclote River drew settlers who fished, farmed, and traded along the Gulf. Anclote was one of the earliest communities in the area when Pasco County was formed from the southern third of Hernando County in 1887. That same year, the Anclote Key Lighthouse began shining just offshore, guiding vessels toward the river mouth and the growing sponge harbor in nearby Tarpon Springs.
For decades, this corner of southwest Pasco stayed quiet, with pine flatwoods, small farms, and scattered homesteads. That changed after World War II, when Florida’s population boom pushed new development north from Pinellas County along US 19.
The community earned its cheerful name in the early 1960s. William W. Boyd, president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Tarpon Springs, noticed a road called Holiday Drive on a map near the site of a planned branch office. He asked his board to name the new branch Holiday, then rallied local support to give that same name to the entire community. It stuck.
Through the 1960s and 1970s, neighborhoods such as Holiday Lake Estates, Holiday Lake Villas, and Holiday Lake West filled with new homes purchased by retirees and young families alike. The Anclote Power Plant, built along the coast, brought jobs and infrastructure to the area. Today, Holiday is an unincorporated community of more than 20,000 residents and a valued part of the greater Tampa Bay region.
Living and Working in Holiday
Holiday offers the relaxed pace of coastal Florida with big-city conveniences close at hand. Residents enjoy Gulf breezes, waterfront parks, and a cost of living that is often friendlier than communities farther south in Pinellas County. US 19 connects commuters to jobs in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Tampa, while local employers in healthcare, retail, and utilities keep many people working close to home.
Families appreciate the Pasco County School District, which operates several elementary schools within Holiday, along with Pasco-Hernando State College’s campus in nearby New Port Richey. Add year-round fishing, boating, and sunshine, and it is easy to see why so many people are proud to call Holiday home.
